What happened
On July 8, 2026, xAI launched Grok 4.5, its most capable model yet, built on a new mixture-of-experts architecture and aimed squarely at coding and agentic tasks. It is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, well below comparable models from Anthropic and OpenAI, and ships inside tools like Cursor as well as the xAI API. xAI says it was trained across tens of thousands of Nvidia GB300 GPUs.
The context
Aggressive pricing on a capable coding model puts pressure on rivals' developer businesses.
Developers get another strong, cheaper option for building software with AI, which can lower the cost of the apps built on top.
